Chapter Fifteen

One would think that a nightclub would be barren at nine o’clock in the morning on a Monday, right? Not Aether. The weathered outside of the derelict warehouse didn’t show it, but the inside of the witch club was teeming with people – most of them in various stages of undress. I felt sorely underdressed – or overdressed, as the case may be – in my black jeans, black tank, and – you guessed it – a pair of sweet black booties. My only nod to color was my blue hair and the tangle of assorted amulets hanging from my neck.

I wondered if these people had lives, or if since they lived so long, partying was all that they did. Or maybe since Aether was the hub of the community, this was where they did business.

Without clothes.

Barrett and Marcus went their own way to see if they could get an audience with one – or all three – of the Fates. I wouldn’t begin to know how Barrett could call the Fates. Did they have cell phones? And if they weren’t answering his calls, would they be more inclined to speak to him in person? I hoped they had more luck than I did. Somehow, I figured I would prefer looking at a crime scene to talking to Atropos again.

Luckily for me, the club wasn’t nearly as packed near the entrance, letting me have an unobstructed bee-line for the hallway I was after. Aether itself was a maze of corridors. Some doors led to storage rooms, and others led to different cities, a few even led to different planes of existence. Honestly, the door juju really freaked me out.

I suppose it would freak me out more if I couldn’t see the magics surrounding them.

I was ten steps into the hallway that would take me to the high courtroom, when a familiar voice sounded behind me.

“I knew you’d leave me behind,” Alistair playfully scolded causing me to freeze and whirl to face him.

He was as casually dressed as I was, only he pulled it off way better than I did. Screw a tuxedo, this man shouldn’t be without jeans and a black t-shirt. If he weren’t such a dick all the time, I could definitely see myself drooling. Pity.

“Tough to exclude you when you bail all on your own. I didn’t see you staying to help Barrett and Marcus search through the grimoires.”

His smile was snide as he pushed off the wall he was leaning on. “I had a contact to get back to after I was so rudely interrupted. Sorry I couldn’t stay to spin my wheels getting exactly nowhere.”

I wondered how he knew we didn’t find anything, but I almost didn’t want to ask. Too bad my mouth couldn’t help itself.

“How do you know we didn’t break the case?” I asked accusingly as I crossed my arms.

“You wouldn’t be here looking like you were on a mission if you did,” he answered simply, and I couldn’t argue.

“Fine, you really want to help? I’m not going to stop you.
